How Genshin damage is actually calculated

Every non-transformative hit is one multiplication of seven factors. If you understand each one, you can diagnose exactly why a hit deals the number it does — and which single upgrade will move it the most. The calculator above breaks your exact panel into these same factors. The math follows the official damage formula, cross-checked against the Genshin Impact wiki damage formula.

Total ATK × Skill Multiplier × (1 + DMG Bonus) × CRIT × Reaction × DEF × RES

How each of the 7 multipliers works

1. Total ATK — the base of everything

Total ATK is built from three parts: Base ATK (your character’s white number plus your weapon’s base attack — not the flat attack from artifacts), multiplied by ATK% bonuses (artifact sands, sub-stats, weapon passives, team buffs), then plus Flat ATK (the feather artifact’s +311, and Bennett’s buff). The formula is:

Total ATK = (Base ATK) × (1 + ATK%) + Flat ATK

Worked example: a level-90 character with 800 base ATK, a 46.6% ATK sands, 20% from sub-stats, and a +311 feather has 800 × 1.666 + 311 ≈ 1,644 ATK. The key insight is that ATK% only multiplies Base ATK — so on a low-base-ATK character like Hu Tao (106 base ATK), ATK% is nearly worthless and HP or Elemental Mastery scales far better.

2. Skill multiplier — your talent number

Every talent has a multiplier expressed as a percentage of ATK — a "300%" talent means the hit deals 3.0× your Total ATK before any other factor. This is the single most underrated upgrade in the game: each talent level from 8 to 10 is a guaranteed 6-7% damage increase on that skill, with no RNG, no farming, no resin lottery. Leveling your main talent to 9 or 10 is almost always the highest return-per-resin action you can take, which is why the calculator defaults to a talent-10 reference panel.

When comparing characters, remember that a character’s power is the product of their talent multipliers and how often those hits land. A 900% single hit (Zhongli’s Planet Befall) and a 200% hit that repeats twenty times (Ayaka’s burst) can deal similar total damage.

3. DMG Bonus — elemental & weapon bonuses

Your elemental goblet (46.6%), weapon passives, artifact set bonuses (Crimson Witch’s Pyro bonus, Emblem’s burst bonus), and supports like Kazuha or Yelan all add into one single multiplier: (1 + total DMG Bonus). Because they stack additively, the more DMG Bonus you already have, the less each additional 46.6% is worth relatively. This is exactly why an ATK% goblet can beat an elemental goblet when a character already has a huge DMG Bonus from their kit.

The general rule: if your DMG Bonus (goblet + weapon + set) is under ~100%, an elemental goblet is almost always best. Past ~150% total bonus, a well-rolled ATK% goblet becomes competitive. The calculator’s "Add +46.6% DMG bonus" advisor row shows exactly how much an elemental goblet is worth on your current build.

4. CRIT — the 1:2 balancing act

A crit multiplies the hit by (1 + Crit DMG). Averaged over many hits, your expected damage uses the multiplier (1 + Crit Rate × Crit DMG). Because Crit Rate and Crit DMG multiply each other, and because a single Crit Rate roll (max 3.9%) is worth exactly half a Crit DMG roll (max 7.8%), the mathematically optimal balance is 1:2.

Concretely: a 50% / 200% build has a crit multiplier of 1 + 0.5 × 2.0 = 2.0, while a 70% / 160% build with the same total investment reaches 1 + 0.7 × 1.6 = 2.12 — a genuine ~6% damage gain just from rebalancing. Aim for at least 60% Crit Rate on a main DPS before stacking more Crit DMG.

5. Reaction — Vaporize & Melt amplify

Vaporize multiplies the entire hit by 1.5×, Melt by 2.0× (when the correct element triggers). Elemental Mastery then scales that bonus by 2.78 × EM ÷ (EM + 1400), so the first 100 EM is worth far more than the next 100 — this steep drop-off is why reaction carries want some EM (roughly 100-200) but rarely stack it past 300. Transformative reactions (Overload, Bloom, Hyperbloom) work differently and are covered in the next section.

6. DEF multiplier — why level matters

Enemy defense reduces your damage by (Character Level + 100) ÷ ((Character Level + 100) + (Enemy Level + 100) × (1 − DEF Shred)). Against a same-level enemy this is exactly 0.5 — you deal half your pre-defense damage. Against a level-100 enemy it drops to ~0.487, which is why a level-80 carry loses noticeable damage against high-level Abyss floors. DEF Shred (Lisa, Klee C2, Ayaka C4, Raiden C2) directly raises this term and is one of the rarest, highest-value buffs in the game.

7. RES multiplier — shred beats stats

Most enemies have 10% resistance, so the baseline multiplier is 0.9. The Viridescent Venerer 4-piece set shreds 40% RES, dropping a 10% enemy to −30%, which flips the multiplier to 1.15 — a ~28% damage increase from a single support. That is why an Anemo unit holding VV is in nearly every reaction team: no artifact sub-stat roll can match it. Below 0 RES each point of shred is worth half, so extra shred past 0 has diminishing returns.

Why this matters: multiplying, not adding

Because all seven factors multiply, raising your weakest factor is worth far more than pushing an already-high factor even higher. If your Crit multiplier is 1.3 while your DMG Bonus is already 1.8, one more Crit roll beats another DMG bonus every time. The calculator’s damage breakdown highlights your weakest multiplier in red — start there. This is the entire philosophy behind the "highest-value upgrades" list: it re-simulates each change and tells you which one actually moves the number.

Elemental reactions explained

Reactions fall into three families that scale completely differently — pick the one your team actually triggers.

Amplifying reactions: Vaporize & Melt

These multiply your entire hit, including all your ATK, CRIT and DMG Bonus — which is why Vaporize and Melt carries are the game’s highest single-hit damage dealers. The multiplier depends on which element triggers:

How Elemental Mastery scales it

Elemental Mastery scales the multiplier further by 2.78 × EM ÷ (EM + 1400). At 100 EM that’s about +18.5% on top of the base multiplier, at 200 EM about +35%, but by 400 EM the returns have flattened to about +62% — the first 100 EM is worth nearly as much as the next 300. That is why reaction carries aim for roughly 100-200 EM and spend the rest of their budget on CRIT.

Transformative reactions: Overload, Bloom & more

These deal a separate, fixed hit that ignores ATK, talent multiplier and CRIT entirely. Their damage depends only on the triggering character’s level, their Elemental Mastery, and the enemy’s RES. The formula is:

Level & EM scaling numbers

The level multiplier at character level 90 is 1446.85 (at 80 it is 1077.44 — a ~34% jump from 80 to 90). EM scales by 16 × EM ÷ (EM + 2000). Because these reactions ignore CRIT, a Hyperbloom trigger wants only EM and level — a 900 EM level-90 Hyperbloom deals roughly 30,000+ per seed before resistance, which is why Hyperbloom teams are the cheapest high-damage option in the game.

Quicken reactions: Aggravate & Spread

Quicken adds a flat damage bonus that still benefits from CRIT and DMG Bonus — so Aggravate/Spread carries build a normal CRIT set.

Why the two Dendro families build differently

This is the single most common build mistake with Dendro teams: applying Bloom’s full-EM logic to a Quicken carry. Practical rule: Quicken carries build CRIT + EM sands; Bloom-family triggers build pure EM. Identify which reaction your team actually triggers before farming artifacts.

How to increase your damage

Players almost always farm artifacts first and level talents last — the exact reverse of the optimal order. Here is the priority path, ranked by damage gained per resin spent.

Level your main talent to 9 or 10

Each talent level is a guaranteed 6-7% multiplier on that skill — no RNG. Leveling a talent from 8 to 10 is often worth more than weeks of artifact farming. Do this before anything else.

Level to 90 for reaction & DEF scaling

For transformative and Quicken teams, going 80→90 raises reaction damage ~34%. For ATK/CRIT carries it is less critical (the DEF multiplier gain is small), but still helps against high-level enemies.

Fix your Crit Ratio toward 1:2

Rebalancing 50/200 into 70/160 is a ~6% gain from the same artifacts. Use the breakdown panel to see your current Crit multiplier and the advisor list to see what a Crit roll is worth on your build.

Run an Anemo unit with Viridescent Venerer

40% RES shred is a ~28% damage increase against most enemies — larger than almost any artifact upgrade. Kazuha, Sucrose or Venti holding VV belongs in every reaction team.

Add Bennett or an equivalent buffer

Bennett’s flat ATK buff is the single biggest common buff in the game. Noblesse 4pc (+20% ATK) and Thrilling Tales (+48% ATK on a catalyst support) are free additions on top.

Farm artifacts last

Artifact sub-stat farming has the worst return per resin because it is pure RNG. Once your talents, level, and team are set, farm for the correct main stats first, then refine sub-stats toward 1:2 Crit.

How to choose between two weapons

The honest way to compare weapons is to change nothing but the weapon and watch the expected damage. Here is the framework the calculator follows:

1. Secondary stat first

A CRIT sub-stat weapon often beats a higher-base-ATK weapon, because CRIT is so scarce and hard to farm elsewhere.

2. Passive must trigger

A weapon whose passive you can’t reliably activate is just a stat stick. Read the trigger condition before assuming it works.

3. Scaling type matters

HP- and DEF-scaling characters care far less about base ATK. Match the weapon to how the character actually scales.

To compare directly: pick your character, set the first weapon, press "Pin current as baseline", then switch to the second weapon. The result panel shows the exact percentage gain or loss.

The 1:2 Crit Ratio, in numbers

Because a Crit Rate roll is worth half a Crit DMG roll, the optimal balance is always 1:2. Here is what that looks like in practice:

Notice how the multiplier climbs fastest when both stats rise together. A 60/120 build (1.72) beats a 50/140 build (1.70) despite the second looking flashier — this is why "more Crit DMG" is usually the wrong instinct.

Common damage mistakes (and how to fix them)

Most "why is my damage low?" posts trace back to one of these eight mistakes. Check your build against each.

1. Testing against the wrong enemy

A low-level Hilichurl takes roughly double the damage of a level-90 enemy because of the DEF multiplier. If your "real" numbers are half what a streamer shows, check the enemy level first — not your artifacts. Always test against a level-90 target with known resistance.

2. Chasing Crit DMG while ignoring Crit Rate

A 50/200 build deals less average damage than a 70/160 build, even though the 200 number looks better in screenshots. Expected damage is 1 + Crit Rate × Crit DMG — both matter. If your Crit Rate is under 60%, every Crit DMG roll you add is half-wasted on non-crits.

3. Stacking too much ATK%

Once Bennett or Thrilling Tales is in the team, ATK% has steep diminishing returns. At that point an EM sands (for reaction carries) or a DMG goblet is almost always a bigger gain than another ATK% roll. Watch the advisor list — if "Add +20% ATK" ranks at the bottom, you have too much already.

4. Forgetting resistance shred

Viridescent Venerer’s 40% RES shred is a ~28% damage increase against most enemies — bigger than almost any artifact upgrade. A reaction team without an Anemo VV holder is leaving a full multiplier on the table, no matter how good the carry’s artifacts are.

5. Building CRIT on a transformative trigger

Hyperbloom, Burgeon and Overload damage ignores ATK and CRIT entirely — it scales only with level and EM. A Hyperbloom trigger built with a Crit circlet does almost no reaction damage. If your team is Bloom-family, the trigger character wants pure EM and level, nothing else.

6. Neglecting talent levels

A talent level is a guaranteed 6-7% multiplier, yet players farm artifacts for weeks instead of spending a few days on talent books. Leveling your main skill from 6 to 10 is a ~35% damage increase with zero RNG — check your talent levels before blaming your artifacts.

7. Leaving reaction carries at level 80

For transformative and Quicken teams, level 80→90 raises reaction damage by roughly 34%. For Hyperbloom and Aggravate carries that is a bigger jump than a full set of better artifacts. If your team relies on reactions, level the trigger character to 90.

8. Ignoring Elemental Mastery on Vaporize/Melt carries

The first 100 EM adds ~18.5% to a Vaporize hit — more than most ATK% rolls. If your Hu Tao, Xiangling or Ganyu is sitting at 0 EM, an EM sands (or EM sub-stats) is likely your biggest single upgrade. Push to 100-200 EM, then stop — the returns flatten fast.

The rule of thumb

A new character almost always beats a constellation unless that constellation is a documented breakpoint. The breakpoints that actually matter are the ones that ignore DEF (Raiden C2, Ayaka C4), let reactions crit (Nahida C2), remove a core limitation (Hu Tao C1, Neuvillette C1), or speed up a stacking mechanic (Furina C2). Most C3, C4 and C5 constellations are small — verify before you spend.

Most guides tell you a weapon is "best" without numbers. Here each weapon is run through the same damage engine on the character’s reference panel (level 90, talent 10, recommended artifacts, no team buffs). Frequently asked questions

How is Genshin Impact damage calculated?

A single hit multiplies five independent factors: Total ATK, the skill’s talent multiplier, a DMG Bonus factor (elemental goblet, weapon passives, set bonuses), a CRIT factor (1 + Crit Rate × Crit DMG for expected damage), and two defensive factors — enemy DEF and enemy RES. The full formula is Damage = Total ATK × Skill Multiplier × (1 + DMG Bonus) × CRIT × Reaction × DEF multiplier × RES multiplier. Because every factor multiplies the others, stacking one factor very high has diminishing value compared to raising several factors together.

What is the Genshin damage formula?

The complete non-transformative formula is: Damage = Base ATK × (1 + ATK%) + Flat ATK, then multiplied by Skill Multiplier, then by (1 + Total DMG Bonus), then by the CRIT factor (1 + CR × CD for the expected value, or 1 + CD for a guaranteed crit), then by the reaction multiplier (1.5 for Vaporize, 2.0 for Melt, scaled further by Elemental Mastery), then by the DEF multiplier — (Character Level + 100) ÷ ((Character Level + 100) + (Enemy Level + 100) × (1 − DEF Shred)) — and finally by the RES multiplier, which is 1 − RES above 0, 1 − RES/2 below 0, and 1/(1 + 4×RES) when RES is 0.75 or higher.

How accurate is this Genshin damage calculator?

The math follows the official damage formula, so against a target with the same level, resistance and buffs you set, results should match the in-game number within a point or two — the small gap comes from hidden rounding in the game. The bigger source of error is input: if your artifact sub-stats, talent level, or active buffs are entered slightly differently from your real build, the result will drift. Always double-check that the character level, enemy level, elemental resistance and reaction state match your actual test.

How does Elemental Mastery affect damage?

Elemental Mastery scales two different things. For amplifying reactions (Vaporize and Melt), EM multiplies the base reaction bonus by 2.78 × EM ÷ (EM + 1400), so 100 EM adds roughly 18.5% to a Vaporize hit. For transformative reactions (Overload, Bloom, Hyperbloom, Swirl and friends), EM scales by 16 × EM ÷ (EM + 2000). The catch is that EM has steep diminishing returns — the first 100 EM is worth far more than the next 100 — so for reaction carries, balance EM with CRIT and DMG bonus rather than stacking EM alone.

What is the difference between Crit Rate and Crit DMG?

Crit Rate is the chance a hit crits; Crit DMG is how much extra damage a crit deals. Expected damage is 1 + Crit Rate × Crit DMG, so the two multiply each other — this is why the 1:2 ratio is the community rule of thumb: each point of Crit Rate costs twice as much as a point of Crit DMG, so a balanced build maximizes their product. At 60% Crit Rate and 120% Crit DMG, you have a 1.72× crit multiplier; the same total investment pushed to 75% × 150% gives 2.125× — a genuine upgrade from the same budget.

Vaporize vs Melt — which reaction is better?

Melt has the higher raw multiplier (2.0× vs Vaporize’s 1.5× when the right element triggers), but in practice Vaporize teams often deal more sustained damage because Pyro and Hydro applications are easier to keep consistent, letting the reaction trigger on nearly every hit. Melt comps (Ganyu, Wriothesley) hit very hard per shot but are gated by how fast Cryo can be applied. What is the difference between on-field and off-field DPS?

An on-field DPS (also called a carry or hypercarry) deals damage through normal attacks, charged attacks or a Burst that requires them to stay on the field — Hu Tao, Neuvillette, Raiden and Mavuika are examples. An off-field DPS deals damage while another character is active — Xiangling’s Pyronado, Fischl’s Oz, Yelan’s Burst and Xingqiu’s Raincutter. Most strong teams pair one on-field carry with one or two off-field DPS plus a support, so all four characters contribute damage simultaneously. This calculator reports per-hit damage for whichever character you select — it does not yet sum a full rotation.

Can I calculate DPS (damage per second) instead of damage per hit?

This calculator reports per-hit and expected (crit-averaged) damage for a single skill — it does not yet model full rotation DPS, which would require cooldowns, energy, animation frames and hit counts for every character. For an honest apples-to-apples comparison, keep the same skill, reaction and enemy, and compare the expected damage number. If you need true rotation DPS, pair this calculator with a community spreadsheet or a full team simulator. Per-hit damage is the correct tool for weapon and artifact comparisons, which is what most players actually need.

How do I screenshot damage (nuke showcase)?

A damage-per-screenshot nuke maximizes one amplified hit. The recipe: pick a Melt or reverse-Vaporize Burst (Hu Tao, Mavuika, Childe or Eula for physical), stack Crit DMG extremely high (250%+), then layer Bennett, Kazuha (VV shred + DMG bonus), a reaction enabler, and food/potion buffs. Test against a low-resistance, low-level or debuffed enemy to inflate the number. These builds are not representative of real team DPS — they rely on fishing for the crit and often run under 50% Crit Rate. Use the Expected Damage figure in this calculator if you want a number that reflects actual output over time.

Why do my in-game numbers differ from the calculator?

The most common causes are: (1) enemy mismatch — testing against a different enemy level or resistance than you set here; (2) missing buffs — VV shred, Bennett, resonance and food are part of the “screenshot” numbers you see online; (3) hidden rounding in the game; and (4) the calculator’s reference panel using a talent-10, level-90 preset rather than your exact build.
